Andrew grew up swimming in Oregon, swam competitively for Portland area teams and was one of the top swimmers in Oregon having competed at the state, regional, zone and national levels. Following High School Andrew joined the US Coast Guard.


Today, Andrew is our co-head coach working with all group with a primary focus with the Senior squads. He has served as an Oregon Zone coach, Oregon All-Star coach and coached swimmers through the state, regional, sectional, futures and national levels.


Andrew carries a unique and profound enthusiasm for the sport and his swimmers both in and out of the pool. His approach is not only methodical but is an exceptional stroke technician, season plan specialist and carries an unparalleled ability to connect with his swimmers.

Cyndy von Weller

Cyndy has been a lifelong swimmer who enjoyed participating in many open-water swimming events.

She has been involved with Oregon Swimming since 1993 as a Stroke & Turn official for 10 years. Cyndy earned her ASCA Coaching Level 5 education certification and ASCA Coaching Level 4 certification for both education and experience. She has attended coaching clinics in Lake Placid, New York, and The Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Cyndy has attended the ASCA World Coaches Conference yearly since 2004. 

Cyndy coached the Southridge High School Swim Team from 2002 to 2005. The program grew from 17 to 75 athletes. The Southridge High School Swim Team was the 2004 Boy's Metro-League Champion, and Cyndy was named 2004 Metro League "Coach of the Year."

She began working as a Member Coach with the MAC swim team in 2001. Cyndy was hired as the Swim America Program Director to develop a new Swim America Swim Lesson program for Multnomah Athletic Club 2004. While building the swim lesson program, she also coached the Pre-Competitive Squad.  Cyndy brought the Swim America Swim Lesson program to MAC in the spring of 2005. She continued to assist the lesson program as she started working full-time as the Age Group coach in 2008; she became Head Age Group coach in 2013 and Associate Head Coach in 2018. 

Cyndy developed an exchange program with Gredos San Diego schools in Madrid, Spain, which allows MAC athletes to experience another culture through competitive swimming.

In 2012, Head Coach Alex Nikitin & Coach Cyndy were invited by President Obama to participate in an exchange program with Russia to build positive relations between the US and Russia through athletics. They traveled to the Washington DC to the Capitol for a briefing with the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and a tour of Washington DC. Then, off to Moscow, Russia, for a two-week stay with 20 Russian athletes at the Russian Olympic Training Center. Can you imagine this was a tremendous experience for athletes and coaches alike?

She was laid off from MAC in April 2020 due to COVID-19. 

She is excited to work with the BAAC swim team to build a high-quality swim program. It is a great honor to work with Andrew and her son Jacob.

Cemil Atay

Assistant Coach

Coach Cemil (“Jameel”) was born and raised in Portland Oregon where he began his swimming career at the age of 9. Unbeknownst to him at the time, Cemil was coached by some of the best coaches in the world, Milt Nelms and Alex Nikitin; both of whom have ultimately shaped his passion and philosophy on coaching not just the swimmer but the individual.


As a swimmer, Cemil’s aquatics career included accomplishments including Washington State high school records, Oregon state records, Western Age Group Zone records and qualifying for nationals in the 200m Breaststroke. Cemil swam at the University of Massachusetts (Div-1) and double majored in Chemical engineering and chemistry. At the University of Massachusetts, Cemil was a part of back-to-back Atlantic-10 championship teams going undefeated in dual-meets his freshman year.  


Cemil started his coaching career at the Tualatin Hills Swim Club in an effort to give back to the sport that helped shape and define his life. After 5 years at THSC, Cemil joined BAAC and the exceptional staff. He has further supported the Oregon Swimming LSC as an administrative chair as the All-Start Head Coach. As such, he has coached at multiple Oregon Select camps, 1 year as OR Zone age-group coach, 2 years as OR Zones & All-Star Head Coach, 2023 Adam Szmidt Team Spirit Award, 2023 Team OR 6th place finish, 2024 OR Zone Team 4th place finish and successfully reintroduced 10&U swimmers to the OR Zone team after a 20+ year hiatus. In 2025 Cemil was selected to coach at the USA Swimming Western/Central Zone camp held in Tempe AZ.


Coach Cemil has worked at Intel for over 24 years as a process engineer, group leader and most recently, Director of Dry Etch Technology Development. He is proud husband and father of two wonderful girls. Cemil has a sincere passion for giving back to the sport that helped shape and define his life.

Jacob von Weller

Jacob fostered a love for swimming at a young age athlete competing on Tualatin Hills Swim Club here in Oregon Swimming. He joined the Multnomah Athletic Club Swim Team when he was 12 years old. He continued to swim competitively through high school and beyond, earning Senior Sectional times in events such as the 200 free, 500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 back, 200 back, 200 IM, 400 IM. Jake swam for Southridge High School and Saint Helens High School in his senior year, breaking records at both high schools in the 500 free.


Jake started his coaching career after graduating from Saint Helen High School. He began teaching swim lessons at the Beaverton Swim Center which eventually led to an assistant coaching role at the Dolphins Swim Team where he worked for several years until embracing the opportunity to be the Head Coach at the Villa Sport Athletic Club and Spa. At Villa Sport, Coach Andrew and Coach Jake helped the team grow from about 80 swimmers to over 150. The team became consistent top 15 finishers in all age groups, at the Oregon Swimming State Championship meets. 


Jake was selected by Oregon Swimming to attend a Leadership Summit at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was nominated for “Age Group Coach of the Year” in 2019. 


Jake is passionate about teaching each individual swimmer to their highest potential with an emphasis on technical improvement. He has a strong belief in creating a healthy team culture that welcomes and embraces all personalities and athletes of every culture.

Maddie Day

Coach Maddie grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. She has been teaching swim lessons and coaching for over 10 years and is a certified personal trainer through NASM. She’s worked with kids from 6 months all the way to 18 years of age. As an assistant swim coach, she currently works with all ages and groups, but primarily focuses on our developmental program.


Maddie is exceptionally passionate about swimming and helping swimmers feel happy, confident, and healthy both in and out of the water. Maddie has been the Oregon Western Zone Age Group coach in both 2023 and 2024.

Tristan Briggs

Tristan’s passion for swimming began at the age of six when he first took lessons, and by eight, he was competing with local swim clubs. From an early age, he knew he wanted to be a swim coach. Alongside club swimming, he served as captain of his high school swim team all four years. As one of Oregon’s top swimmers, Tristan competed at the state, regional, and senior sectional levels.


His coaching career began with the Westview High School swim team (2011–2016). From 2016 to 2019, he served as Assistant Coach and Olympic Way Director for Tualatin Hills Swim Club, while also coaching on Oregon Swimming’s Zone and All-Star staffs. In 2019, Tristan joined VillaSport Swim Club as an Assistant Coach and was promoted to Head Coach in 2020.


Tristan’s coaching philosophy emphasizes developing and refining proper form and technique by carefully analyzing each swimmer’s stroke. He believes in building a strong technical foundation to help swimmers progress with confidence. Equally important to him is connecting with each swimmer individually to understand their needs and goals. His technical expertise and mentorship have helped swimmers of all levels succeed whether striving for state titles or learning the fundamentals of competitive swimming.


Tristan challenges swimmers to push beyond their comfort zones, celebrates their successes, and frames mistakes as valuable opportunities for growth. He believes competitive swimming not only builds physical fitness but also cultivates life skills such as discipline, patience, and resilience.


Dedicated to fostering a culture of respect, commitment, hard work, and mutual support, Tristan shares a genuine love of the sport. His overarching goal is for every swimmer to experience the success, passion, and joy that come from being part of a great swim team.
